Organizations applying for a grant must address either of the following priorities:
  • Access to necessary health services with particular emphasis on eliminating the barriers often encountered by persons in need
  • Wellness, with particular attention to substance abuse, including tobacco; HIV/AIDS and STDs; adolescent pregnancy prevention; and mental health.
In addition to these priorities, the Foundation has a strong and special interest in funding organizational development and technical assistance projects that help communities build the capacity to help themselves improve the health of those in their communities.

Eligibility
In addition to meeting the criteria above, your organization must serve primarily the residents in the geographic area served by Moses Cone Health System and be one of the following:
  • not-for-profit organization
  • government agency
  • public school
  • academic and research institution
  • collaborative and consortia
For organizations who meet the criteria above, Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation provides three types of grants:

1 > Community Health Improvement Fund (CHIF Grant)

CHIF Grants provide support for new programs that address emerging or priority health needs; programs that demonstrate new and innovative approaches to addressing such needs; or to provide start-up funding for demonstrated best practices.  We define innovation as the explicit test of a new approach to outperform a present practice.  We use this definition to say that we are less interested in what is novel than what is better when it comes to producing health outcomes.  We are interested in investing in new approaches, not in ongoing programmatic services.  Please note that groups seeking funds for current activities by simply adding the word "innovative" in the grant application will not be well served by the CHIF grant review process.  CHIF grants are one-time grants and are not renewable, but the term of a CHIF grant may extend up to 24 months.  However, regardless of the term, the maximum amount available is $40,000 per program.

2 > Direct Foundation Grant (DF Grant)

Direct Foundation (DF) grants are intended to support larger scale sustainable initiatives and programs that address core elements of the Foundation's funding as noted above.  Generally, Direct Foundation grants support implementation of best practices that are of a size and scope sufficient to address one of the Foundation's funding priorities on a community-wide basis.  A Direct Foundation grant may follow a successful CHIF grant, and provide funding, for example, to bring a CHIF funded pilot program to community-wide scale.  Direct Foundation grants are usually (but need not be) greater than $40,000 per year, and can be made for multiple years.  However, the Foundation Board generally reserves the right to review progress of multi-year programs and approve disbursement of multi-year grants on an annual basis.

  3 > Special Funding Initiatives

In addition, the Foundation has a special funding initiative in collaboration with local partners.

Building Stronger Neighborhoods Collaborative
The Building Stronger Neighborhoods Collaborative connects with neighborhoods through grants and activities that mobilize neighborhood assets to enhance quality of life. It is a grants and technical assistance program for neighborhoods with limited resources in greater Greensboro. The program is supported by a collaborative of local foundations, including the Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation, seeking to sustain neighborhoods’ self-development as healthy building blocks of the community. The program is administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Please contact Tara Sandercock, Vice President for Programs at the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, for more information on the BSN program.
